Emc tests for equipment and devices in the area of power plants and substations

CE marking is mandatory for the marketing of electronic devices and systems within the EU. For this purpose, among other things, EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) must be tested according to the relevant product standards (harmonized standards).

However, for devices and equipment in the area of power plants, switching stations, and similar environmental conditions, the requirements with regard to interference immunity are significantly higher and more extensive than for so-called standard EMC tests due to the processes and procedures relevant there. Typical EMC product standards here are, for example, IEC EN 61000-6-5, EN 61850-3, or IEC EN 61000-6-7. Compared to EN 61000-6-2, which covers general industrial areas, these standards include not only significantly higher test levels but also additional requirements:

  • EN 61000-4-18 (Ring wave, oscillating pulses)
  • EN 61000-4-16 (Immunity to conducted, common mode disturbances 0 Hz to 150 kHz)
  • EN 61000-4-17 (Ripple on DC power)
  • EN 61000-4-29 (Voltage dips and interruptions on DC power)

In this context, further requirements that go beyond the usual CE requirements can also be found in corresponding project specifications:

  • EN 61000-4-10 (Damped oscillatory magnetic field immunity)
  • EN 6100-4-13 (Harmonics and interharmonics)
  • EN 61000-4-28 (Variation of power frequency)
  • EN 61000-4-5 (Surge immunity test, up to 10 kV and 10 kA)

Due to the extensive test equipment in our EMC laboratory in Puchheim, near Munich, we can carry out these and other tests on your systems for you. We support you in planning and carrying out a complete and cost-effective qualification of your system. Our accreditations by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) are also recognized internationally by the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).
