EMC testing of pedelecs and e-bikes in accordance with EPAC/EMC standard EN 15194

E-bikes and pedelecs are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to using a car and must meet high legal requirements in terms of quality, safety, usability and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility). SGS Germany GmbH maintains an accredited, modern EMC test laboratory at its Puchheim site near Munich. For testing e-bikes and pedelecs (Electrically Power Assisted Cycles - EPACs), a roller test bench from maturo GmbH is available for EMC testing at the new site. This means that both bicycle and component manufacturers can have all the necessary mandatory EMC tests for EPACs (Electrically Power Assisted Cycles) carried out in a time-saving and cost-effective manner.

Main features

  • Three independent drives for front wheel, rear wheel and pedals
  • Precise readout and calculation of speed, torque, power and efficiency
  • Measurement of electromagnetic emission with a load of 75% ± 10% in accordance with CISPR 12
  • Electromagnetic immunity test with 90% support speed

The technical requirements are described in the EN 15194 standard and contain the EMC requirements for the EPACs in Appendix C.

  • Measurement of interference emission according to CISPR 12 with load
  • Test of immunity to RF field (according to ISO 11451-1/-2) in “standby” mode, i.e. without pedal movement, when stationary at 0 km/h
  • Interference immunity test in “driving mode”, i.e. with release of the motor via movement or pedal pressure
  • Interference immunity test in “Start-off assistance” mode for vehicles equipped with this mode, i.e. without pedal movement and with speed control via speed control device/lever

OUR EXPERTISE AND TESTING FACILITIES ALSO COVER THE FOLLOWING INDUSTRIES AND PRODUCT AREAS, AMONG OTHERS

  • Medical devices and systems
  • In-vitro diagnostic systems (IVD)
  • Laboratory, measuring and control devices
  • Electromobility and charging infrastructure
  • Vehicles including their components (e.g. for ECE R10 or various OEM requirements)
  • Construction machinery as well as agricultural and forestry machinery
  • Machines and control systems for complex systems including EMC with regard to functional safety
  • IT/multimedia, audio/video, telecommunications
  • Radio systems incl. combined equipment

  • Vehicle impulse measurements
  • ESD tests up to 30 kV
  • Various test equipment for high-voltage systems incl. ISO/DTS 7637-4 and surge/burst on DC up to 1000 V/100 A

This means that components, small assemblies, and devices through to heavy construction machinery, including X-ray systems, can be tested in accordance with international requirements.

In addition to the actual EMC testing, our strength lies in providing you with constructive support in the event of EMC problems and limit value violations.

Through our involvement in various national standards committees, we can inform you in good time about future requirements for your projects so that these can be taken into account at an early stage of development.
